The Drama Department at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School will open the 2013-2014 season with Paul Sill’s “Story Theatre,” at 7:30 p.m., Nov 7-9 in the SCCC/ATS Showcase Theatre. Sills and the company developed "Story Theatre" from actual fairy tales, using improvisational theater techniques and is a play with music adapted from fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. These techniques, under Sills’ direction evolved into The Second City in Chicago, the first improvisational theater company in the United States. “Story Theatre” improvises plays from stories, myths, folk tales and legends. In this production, actors both tell the stories and act them out. “Story Theatre” ran on Broadway and was nominated for three Tony Awards including Best Play. It features 10 stories including, “The Robber Bridegroom”, “Henny Penny”, “The Fisherman and his Wife” and “The Golden Goose”. The stories appeal to both adults and children and are funny, scary and compelling. SCCC/ATS actors Jade Antrim, Cody Mitchell, Killian Doze, Franklin Guillen, Tabitha Barnett, Kevin Altamirano, Juan Carlos Contreras, Jay Castor, Amira Coleman, and Jessica Malin, all of Liberal; Stephanie Drymalski, Darien Wisc.; Glenda Patterson, Copeland; Erandi Garcia, Dodge City; and Jamie Mix, Salt Lake City. The play will also feature music from the Beatles songbook played by an instrumental ensemble led by Darin Workman, SCCC/ATS Instrumental Music instructor. A storybook-themed set design is painted under the direction of Susan Copas, SCCC /ATS Art instructor and her students.
