Crusader staff member Tonya Loewen of Meade
competed in an individual page design contest at the Minneapolis Best of the
Midwest Conference this weekend, and she came home with the first-place award.
She is a student at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School. The
Crusader staff also collected another Best of Show Award, this time fourth
place among two-year newspapers at the Best of the Midwest competition.
Loewen entered a page design she completed last
semester on Top 5 Dorm Recipes. Since the individual contests at Best of the
Midwest are open-class, Loewen had to top not only all of the two-year entries
but also all four-year university entries to claim her top-place finish.
Loewen and Crusader entertainment editor Megan
Spain, along with Crusader adviser and journalism instructor Anita Reed,
represented the Crusader at the convention in Minneapolis.
More than 250 students were eligible to compete at Best of the Midwest as
attendees of the convention.
Loewen, Spain and Reed attended training sessions
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and were able to learn from keynote speakers such
as Molly Bloom of Minnesota Public Radio News; Monica Moses, editor in
chief of American Craft magazine; and Emmy award-winning multimedia producer
McKenna Ewen of the Star Tribune.
