Members of the community enjoyed conversation, light refreshments and live music at a come-and-go welcome reception for SCCC/ATS President, Dr. Ken Trzaska Sept. 24. The event provided a casual setting to visit with Trzaska and his wife, Dr. Anu Trzaska.

³I¹m so thankful that the college brought me to Kansas, and to Liberal,² Trzaska said, ³and I¹m looking forward to seeing people I¹ve had a chance to meet, and everyone else as well.² Trzaska said his wife shared his anticipation about the evening.

Trzaska comes to SCCC/ATS from his former position as Dean of Instruction and Chief Academic Officer at Gogebic Community College, in Ironwood, Mich., a community of about 5,500 on the upper peninsula of Michigan. The family will split time between Liberal and the upper Midwest for the next eight months in order to enable their daughter to complete her senior high school year with her friends.

Board chair Ron Oliver encouraged the public to take advantage of the opportunity to meet the Trzaskas in a relaxed, one-on-one setting.

³We did a nationwide search that brought many strong applicants to our attention, but he floated to the top,² said board chair Ron Oliver. ³We¹re just thrilled to have Ken on board, and we already see the positive impact he¹s had on campus.²

The move west appeals deeply to Trzaska, who described his application to SCCC/ATS as ³very deliberate,² a result of his fondness for rural communities.

³I¹m really attracted to being a part of good people rallying in these smaller communities, creating momentum, working collaboratively,² he said. ³This job is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the community and do some good things.²

In his first month on the job, Trzaska has focused on encouraging team members at SCCC/ATS to approach each day as ³an opportunity to do better, and to do great work,² he said. ³That¹s what I like to do ‹ bring people together, be close as team members, look out for each other.²

Thursday¹s reception offered a chance to take that optimism a little further.

³We¹re going to connect what¹s happening in our internal community on campus with the external community as a whole,² Trzaska said. ³I¹m really excited about it.²
