Lady Saints Alum Named Interim Head Coach

Candi White (center)Seward County Community College alum Candi White, has been elevated to Interim Head Coach for the women’s basketball program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. White was promoted on Monday, Dec. 11 after UMKC coach Bo Overton announced his immediate resignation as head coach of the Kangaroo basketball program, to accept the General Manager and Head Coaching position with the Chicago Sky of the Women’s National Basketball Association. White, a 2000 graduate of SCCC was hired as an assistant coach at UMKC in 2004-2005, the position she held before being promoted to interim head coach.

White is the all-time, single-season and single-game assist leader at Seward County , where she was the starting point guard from 1998-2000. In her two seasons at SCCC, the Lady Saints recorded an overall record of 67-5. White helped lead the Lady Saints to their first-ever NJCAA Region VI Tournament title, and to their first trip to the NJCAA National Tournament where they finished in 5th place under then head coach, Jim Littell.

White’s accolades at SCCC included being named two-time All-Conference, two-time NJCAA Region VI All-Tournament team, NJCAA All-Region VI (First Team), NJCAA Pre-Season All-American (Second Team) and NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.

White shattered the assists record books recording 577 career assists, including 354 assists (10.4 apg.) in 2000. She posted the top nine games in single-game assists with twice posting 16 assists, three separate occasions chipping in 15 assists and four times recording 14 assists in a single-game.

After graduating from SCCC, White played two seasons at Texas Tech University where she was the starting point guard on legendary coach Marsha Sharps back-to-back “Sweet Sixteen” squads in 2000-2002.

White spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Valparaiso University , while earning her master’s degree in sports administration after graduating from Texas Tech. While an assistant at Valparaiso , her team won two straight Mid-Continent Tournament championships and posted back-to-back 20-win seasons with two appearances at the NCAA Tournament.
